Mède Mi Wá. Quelles h/Histoires racontent les chansons ?: Yewhe Yeton and Cécile Van den Avenne

EHESS @ Camargo 2023

From a collection of music, stories and songs collected in 1931 and during a contemporary fieldwork in Benin, the researcher-musician duo, composed of Yewhe Yeton and Cécile Van den Avenne, proposes a sound and vocal performance, planned for the stage in a live version, accompanied by a podcast, which tells the story behind the scenes. The challenge is to restore an old colonial collection that is sleeping in archives in France, to put it back into circulation and to make it the living material of a contemporary creation.

  • Yewhe Yeton sings and raps, he is also a virtuoso beatboxer, and one of the musicians of B.I.M. He is also an artist-collector. He has developed a laboratory for research, collection and archiving of Beninese rhythms. He travels the country with his recording equipment and archives in his studio in Cotonou.
  • Cécile Van den Avenne is a sociolinguist, teacher-researcher, director of studies at the EHESS (Marseille campus), and member of the Institut des Mondes Africains (IMAF). Her research focuses on language exchanges in situations of colonial contact in West Africa. Her current research focuses on forms of performed restitution.
